Above Knee Prosthetics
Life after an above-knee amputation can bring new challenges, but it can also bring new possibilities. The right prosthesis can play an important role in helping you regain mobility, build confidence, and return to the activities that are meaningful to you.
At Unity, we understand that every person’s journey is different. We take the time to learn about your lifestyle, abilities, and goals so we can develop a prosthetic plan that fits your individual needs. From your first fitting through ongoing care, our goal is to provide the support, guidance, and technology you need as you continue moving forward.
What to Expect
Your care begins with a comprehensive evaluation. We will discuss your medical history, strength, balance, daily activities, current mobility, and personal goals.
When you are ready to begin the fitting process, we will take detailed measurements to begin the “casting process” and create a custom mold of your residual limb. A temporary test prosthesis or “check socket” will be made first so we can evaluate the fit, alignment, comfort, and function before completing your definitive prosthesis.
Because an above-knee prosthesis includes both a knee and a foot, the fitting process can require several appointments and adjustments. Our goal is to create a prosthesis that feels comfortable and supports your everyday activities.
Learning to Walk with an Above-Knee Prosthesis
Learning to walk with an above-knee prosthesis takes time, practice, and patience. Your first steps will typically take place in a safe, controlled setting with support from your care team.
As your strength, balance, and confidence improve, you may progress from parallel bars to a walker, crutches, a cane, or independent walking, depending on your individual needs.
Your progress will depend on several factors, including healing, overall health, strength, balance, previous activity level, and personal goals. We will work closely with your physician, physical therapist, family, and other members of your care team throughout the process.
Personalized Care and Ongoing Support
Your care does not end when you receive your prosthesis. As your body changes and you become more active, your prosthesis may need adjustments to maintain comfort, alignment, and function.
Unity provides ongoing follow-up care, education, maintenance, and support to help you get the most from your prosthesis at every stage.
