Below Knee Prosthetics
At Unity our skilled clinicians and technicians create personalized below-knee prosthetic solutions designed around your mobility needs, lifestyle, and individual goals. Our team takes the time to understand what matters most to you, from safely navigating your home and community to returning to work, exercise, hobbies, and the activities you enjoy most!
What to Expect
Your care begins with a comprehensive evaluation and a conversation about your health, daily activities, and mobility goals. When your residual limb is ready, our clinicians will take detailed measurements and begin the “casting process” getting a custom mold of the residual limb to begin designing your prosthesis.
You will first be fitted with a temporary, test prosthesis or “check socket” that allows our team to evaluate comfort, alignment, and function. Adjustments are made as needed before your definitive prosthesis is completed.
Learning to Walk with Your Prosthesis
For new below-knee amputees, learning to walk with a prosthesis is a gradual process that happens one step at a time. Early training begins between parallel bars, where you can become comfortable standing with your prosthesis, finding your balance, shifting your weight, and taking your first steps with additional support. As you become more comfortable, you will begin working on your walking pattern, balance, and control with the guidance of your care team and physical therapist.
Every patient progresses differently. Our team will work closely with you, your physician, physical therapist, and support system to help you move forward safely and confidently.
Support Beyond Your First Fitting
Your care does not end when you receive your prosthesis. Unity provides continued follow-up, adjustments, education, and support as your body, mobility, and goals change.
We also connect patients with opportunities to build confidence, learn new skills, and connect with others through our amp camps and community events. These programs and events provide encouragement, education, hands-on experiences will help you stay active and engaged throughout your prosthetic journey.
